How to Replace a Hunter Douglas Wood and Faux Wood Blind Cord Tilt Mechanism

Introduction

Cord tilt mechanisms are the devices that allow for the slats of a blind to be tilted, allowing or blocking light into a room. These mechanisms can become damaged for many reasons, and if this happens you do not always need to replace your blind. You can simply change the cord tilt mechanism. The tilt mechanism used in this video is typically used in Hunter Douglas 2” horizontal slat blinds.

Scissors

Pliers

Tape Measure

Parts Needed

Cord Tilt Mechanism

Step 1 – Remove the blind from the window.

Remove the blind from the window, and place it on a flat surface.

Step 2 – Remove the tassels from the tilt mechanism cord.

Set the tassels and washers aside for reuse.

Step 3 – Measure the height and width of the end of the headrail.

Write these measurements down. They will be used later to select the correct tilt mechanism for your blind.

Step 4 – Remove the rail stiffeners.

With pliers, remove the rail stiffeners that are pressed into both ends of the headrail.

Step 5 – Slide the metal tilt rod to disengage the tilt mechanism.

Slide the metal tilt rod away from the cord tilt mechanism.
Do not slide the tilt rod all the way out of the blinds. Just move it enough so that it is no longer inside the cord tilt mechanism.

Step 6 – Remove the tilt mechanism.

Slightly spread the headrail, and remove the tilt mechanism by lifting it up and out of the headrail.

Step 8 – Install the new cord tilt mechanism.

Thread the cord through the hole punched in the headrail first.

Step 9 – Seat the tilt mechanism, and slide the tilt rod through.

Seat the cord tilt mechanism into the headrail of the blinds.
Slide the tilt rod all of the way through the hole in the center of the tilter.
Make sure that the shape of the tilt rod matches up with the shape of the center hole in the tilter.

Step 10 – Replace the end stiffeners.

Step 11 – Reattach the tassels, and rehang the blind.

Child safety recommendations state that all operating cords should be 40% the total length of the blind or less.

Step 12 – Test your repair.

Test the tilting function of your blind by pulling on each of the cords that hang down from the cord tilt mechanism.
